Today would have been Poly Styrene's 54th birthday. My day started with a lovely blue sky and white fluffy, cotton wool clouds that made me think of 'Electric Blue Monsoon', the final song on Poly's last album, 'Generation Indigo'. It's a lovely song with just Poly's unaccompanied voice, a love song to Krishna and to the world.
To celebrate her birthday, Poly's people have released a playlist of favourite songs she came up with in December and this is now Poly's birthday playlist. Here it is:
Joni Mitchell - 'Woodstock'
Janis Joplin - 'Mercedes Benz'
David Bowie - 'Suffragette City'
The Slits - 'Typical Girls'
Stevie Wonder - 'Pastime Paradise'
Duke Ellington - 'Take The 'A' Train'
The Rolling Stones - '(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction'
Sex Pistols - 'Submission'
Marilyn Monroe - 'Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend'
Queen - 'Bohemian Rhapsody'
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - 'Foxey Lady'
Kaiser Chiefs - 'I Predict A Riot'
Billy Idol - 'White Wedding'
Leonard Cohen - 'Suzanne'
Lou Reed - 'Perfect Day'
Listen to some music, think kind thoughts and raise a glass to Poly Styrene.
